Studio Quilts by Lora Rocke

I love the idea of family, as it comes in all “shapes and sizes”. Within that family I am particularly drawn to create images of women.  Women alone, women in groups, young women, modern women, women in hats..... each portrait crafted using a variety of fabrics and a good quantity of thread.  These “snapshots” are meant to  invite you to imagine their history.

On these pages you will find images of my explorations into the intimate qualities of thread and cloth. Connecting past and present through the use of a traditional medium (quilting) to produce a non-traditional means of portraiture.  Gathering inspiration from family albums, vintage photos, and a hatbox full of picture acquired at auction,  I tell stories.
